GOAT

Well when Ovechkin scored his 600th much like his 500th, there has been a vocal minority that say Ovechkin is the greatest goal scorer of all time. This conclusion is based upon the fact the decade Ovechkin plays in is the so-called dead puck era where 50 goals and 100 points are almost impossible mountains to climb for a player in a season. Many also say that Ovechkin is the GOAT due to the larger physique of athletes both in nets and on defence as well as the speed of the game. However, there are many other things to analyze when deciding who is the greatest of all time. Here is my analysis. First off, I think it is important to review a fundamental stat ‘goals per game’. Over his career, Mike Bossy has the best goals per game stats at a 76% clip scoring 573 goals in 752 games. Mario Lemieux comes in second if you consider his whole career. I would argue you should ignore the games after his comeback. After taking three years off Lemieux was obviously not the player he was before...

The Quebec next one where have you gone?

Image
There was a time when Quebec and Ontario would exchange the next one. You got Gretzky we got Lemieux, you got Hull we got Lafleur. However, in the last decade the next one seems to be coming either from Ontario or Nova Scotia. The slew of next ones from Ontario  include Tavares, Stamkos, Hall, Seguin, and next year Connor Mcdavid. Nova Scotia has produced Sydney Crosby and Nathan Mckinnon. Patrice Bergeron is probably the best player from Quebec but he is no offensive superstar. The last number one pick from Quebec was Marc Andre Fleury and the last next one was Vincent Lacavalier 16 years ago. Martin St Louis is still going strong at 38 but he came from nowhere to become the star he is. The best habs player is either the Westerner Carey Price, the Torontonian PK Subban, or the American Max Pacioretty. I recalled there was a period  Quebec journalists were clamoring for a Team Quebec who they thought could compete with Team Canada. That was an era Quebec could have fielded a t...

Sudden Death Overtime

Image
The Toronto Maple Leafs had dominated game 7 versus the Boston Bruins but dramatically the Bruins came back in the third to eliminate a 4-1 lead. Into overtime they went and it ended like they call it a sudden death for the leafs. Series over. The New York Islanders were dominating Game 6 versus the Penguins in overtime when the Penguins stole the puck in the Islanders end. It ended up on Brooks Orpik's stick. He took a shot that seemed to float and have eyes. Game over, series over on a fluke shot. The Montreal Canadiens had outplayed Ottawa most of Game 4. The Senators tied the game in the last minute on a goal-mouth scramble. Early in the overtime period, Kyle Turris took a shot that seemed to float and have eyes. For all intents and purposes that was the end of the series. Sudden death is not fair. Buffalo still remembers Brett Hull and his controversial game winning overtime goal, and most people are still trying to see the shot Patrick Kane made to win the Stanley Cup for the...
