Who’s number one?

Image
Yessssss, Habs won the draft lottery. All habs fans finally could scream we’re number one about something at the end of a disastrous season. It is not the first time the habs have had the first overall pick. Sadly the Flower’s passing reminded us of the shrewd Sam Pollock getting a generational superstar right after winning a stanley cup. Even then, choosing the Flower over Marcel Dionne was not a certainty and what may have clinched it for Lafleur was the fact his junior team defeated Dionne’s junior team in the Memorial Cup playoffs. In fact, even this was without controversy as Dionne’s junior team, trailing 3-2 in wins, forfeited the series because the Quebec city fans were too rowdy and Dionne’s team refused to play there.  Sam Pollock was behind another first overall pick when in 1976 he swapped the habs first pick for the Colorado first pick in 1980. He sweetened the deal with the Rockies  by adding a couple of prospects. Rockies finished dead last in 1980 and the ...

Flower Power Glory Days

As we wave an enthusiastic goodbye and fare thee well to Pierre Gauthier and the Bob Gainey managerial era, I would like to discuss another Habs legend Guy Lafleur. I'd say from 1975 to 1980 Guy Lafleur was the best hockey player in the world. Guy didn't break many records during his time at the mountaintop. My blog wants to point out why. As great as Guy was, I always felt there was something missing or more a missed opportunity. Guy Lafleur was sensational with the Quebec Remparts during his junior career. In his final junior year he had 130 goals in 62 games. The Remparts also won the Memorial Cup. This may have been the last time Guy was unleashed to his full capacity. Through the shenanigans of Sam Pollock, Guy Lafleur was drafted first overall by the Stanley Cup champions. The year before Jean Beliveau retired a 10 time Cup winner, and big Jean classy as ever had offered his number 4 to Guy. Luckily Guy turned it down. Guy was bright enough to state he...

Habs History in so many tweets

Image
Posted these tweets and now I combined them. A little habs trivia and history :     The habs had a dynasty in the 60’s few people mention 4 cups in 5 years and they made the cup final in between and no superstars other than Jean Beliveau and Henri Richard and a young Yvan Cournoyer for all 4 cups Boom Boom Geoffrion had 50 goals and 95 points in 64 games in 1960-61, if he had not missed 6 games he surely would have been the first to break the 50 goal record and score 100 points.   Claude Provost of les habs won 9 Stanley Cups only three players have won more Jean Beliveau Henri Richard and Yvan Cournoyer.   Jean Guy Talbot won 7 stanley Cups only two defencemen have won more Serge Savard and Red Kelly who was only a defenceman for 5 cups and then was turned into a forward  There are at least 5 members of les habs that won a cup with the habs and also won a cup with duh laffs i mean leafs John McCormack, Bert O...

The Quebec next one where have you gone?

Image
There was a time when Quebec and Ontario would exchange the next one. You got Gretzky we got Lemieux, you got Hull we got Lafleur. However, in the last decade the next one seems to be coming either from Ontario or Nova Scotia. The slew of next ones from Ontario  include Tavares, Stamkos, Hall, Seguin, and next year Connor Mcdavid. Nova Scotia has produced Sydney Crosby and Nathan Mckinnon. Patrice Bergeron is probably the best player from Quebec but he is no offensive superstar. The last number one pick from Quebec was Marc Andre Fleury and the last next one was Vincent Lacavalier 16 years ago. Martin St Louis is still going strong at 38 but he came from nowhere to become the star he is. The best habs player is either the Westerner Carey Price, the Torontonian PK Subban, or the American Max Pacioretty. I recalled there was a period  Quebec journalists were clamoring for a Team Quebec who they thought could compete with Team Canada. That was an era Quebec could have fielded a t...

Doug Harvey and PK Subban and the Molsons

Image
I am at poolside at an extravagant hotel and I am pissed. Well I thought all was well in Habsland. Finally coming to their senses management got rid of overpaid deadwood Josh Gorges and Brian Gionta. They terminated George Parros, Doug Murray, and Ryan White forgettable non- NHL calibre players. Could Travis Moen and Tomas Plekanec be far behind? I thought the reason for not keeping Gorges and not affording Gionta was simple -to re-sign the Norris trophy winning franchise defenceman PK Subban. Bergy gambled a couple of years ago when he signed Subban to a 2 year bridge contract. Even though most hockey pundits understood the superstar potential of Subban and the stats bore that out, Bergy newly hired wanted time to evaluate the star and leadership qualities of his inexperienced defenceman. Bergy was applauded two years ago for holding firm a little like Reagan when he fired the air traffic controllers as one of his first moves as President. In the ensuing two years PK did ...
