I am not amused
I will miss TSN990 if it's actually going to be closing its station in the future. I was listening that first day with Ted Blackman and I think Mitch Melnyk who were on that morning. I also remember winning free hockey tickets the first week and I think the question was about the rover in the 20's. There have been some entertaining personalities on the radio station including Melnyk, Marinaro, Stock and even Joey Elias.
What do we have to look forward to? Well I was listening to the French sports talk on 98.5 tonight and the main topic of conversation was Mathieu (AHL) Darche . Somebody actually called in and said that the fact Darche was not offered a contract was the first major blunder by Bergevin. He also went on to say that the Robinson non-hiring was ok since they hired a francophone instead in J J Daigneault. The host of the show agreed with both points. This folks is what we have to look forward to when we listen to French sports talk.
Larry Robinson was cast aside again by the Montréal Canadiens. I am still trying to understand why Larry has been ignored both present and past for any coaching position with the habs. The excuse about being attached to the Devils can now be put to bed. We are talking about probably one of the all-time great defensemen with the Habs (only Doug Harvey was comparable). We are not discussing Wayne Gretzky who was probably the greatest of all time but has not proven his mettle as a coach. Larry Robinson has been a head coach and has done wonders with the young New Jersey defenseman. Now we can only imagine what he could've taught PK Subban and the other young dmen joining the habs. I remember Larry was ticked off when the habs delayed retiring his number. It was kind of strange when Lou Lamoriello introduced Larry that night. Frankly, Bergevin and Daigneault could not carry Robinson's jockstrap as players.
The hiring of Pierre Gauthier once again shows that recycling is alive and well in the NHL. The old boys network strikes again. First Gainey now Gauthier get a job even though they drove the most legendary team in the history of hockey into the ground. The hiring of Therrien shows that it is difficult to exit this NHL clique. At the same time the likes of Ted Nolan are still looking for work in the NHL.
Marc Bergevin's moves have been average at best so far. His hiring of Therrien is probably his most important move. He has taken a big risk with someone who is not well-respected for his hockey know-how. The draft picks were what everyone expected and the picks were what Gauthier had gotten us last year. Bergevin added no new picks. The free agent signings have been less then inspiring. Brandon Prust is the best of the lot and should help. Francis Bouillon is 36 but he should be good for a year. Colby Armstrong is a Leaf reject so I don't expect much. Another good move was the non-offer to Darche who frankly was an AHLer, and who was in the habs line-up because he spoke french. I hope there will be some more moves. Let's pray Bergevin has more contacts then Gauthier who seemed to be able to trade with only the Blues, Flames and Sharks. If we go into the season with the present line-up forget about the playoffs and think of the first pick over-all.
