The NHL Season: Suspense

Image
The NHL season and the NHL brand may be heading towards its most interesting and suspenseful season in over a decade. We have established stars trying to maintain their elevated standing in the league, traded franchise players hoping to invigorate their new destinations, high flying rookies adding a new energy and verve, and GM's and coaches hoping to hold on to their jobs. PK Subban and Shea Weber have been pitted against each other through no doing of their own. Both Nashville and Montreal have been close to the Stanley Cup final in the last few years but have been unable to get over the hump. Both teams think they got the missing link that will lead to Cup glory. Each player wants to desperately win the Cup to cement their legacy. Weber is the much more respected player by coaches and players, meanwhile PK has been making his own waves with his personality. Weber has been clearly more productive in the early stages of the season leading the habs to first place overall. PK ha

It's not Trump

Let us not be distracted by the clown-show that is Donald Trump. Donald is just the messenger, granted he is a bombastic egomaniac and obnoxious ahole. Unfortunately, Hillary's campaign has been keying on how unfit Donald is and attacking his temperment. They forgot what he stands for. Donald is representing the republican party. The party that wants lower taxes for rich people. The party that wants to abolish the right to have an abortion and will put in justices on the supreme court that will agree with this stand. The republican party does not want gays marrying. The party that says it will be militarily aggressive including sending soldiers in another major war and maybe use nuclear weapons. The party also intends to increase military spending. The party also does not think climate change is an issue. At the same time this is the party that thinks fossil fuels is still our future. This is the party that will do anything to abolish Obamacare. Let us also not forget this is

Predictions are for gypsies

Well it is almost October, wine season, the leaves turn red, and of course the start of a brand new NHL season. Here are my second annual wild and crazy predictions for this year: 1) Sydney Crosby will exceed his highest point total in a season. His record  is 120 points. He will be playing stress free now that he has won as many cups as Mario.  2) Stamkos will win the Maurice Richard trophy now that he has signed long-term. If not him then it might be Milan Lucic! 3) Conner Mcdavid Jonathan Drouin and Johnny Gaudreau will get 100 points. Should be fun  watching them deke and dangle their way around the defence. 4) Victor Hedman or PK Subban will win the Norris. Unlike in Montreal when PK would make an error, in Nashville Roman Josi has the speed to recover and cover up. 5) Boston Philadelphia Detroit and Toronto will not make the playoffs. The axis of evil foiled again. 6) Tampa Bay will win the Stanley Cup defeating the Predator

Fare Thee Well PK

Well it's all over now. The Habs have done the unthinkable to many and the inevitable to others. PK Subban has been traded for Shea Weber. I think we have to understand this trade from what makes sports tick and that is money. It is also a story of greed and jealousy. Habs management most notably Marc Bergevin and their head coach Michel Therrien have never been comfortable with PK Subban. There has always been an incompatibility between them and PK's flamboyance and self promotion. Michel Therrien is a lunch pail coach, he prefers grit to flash, high work rate to moments of genius, conservatism to improvisation. Even there this was not the main problem with PK. The real issue was money. It started when Bergevin made the terrible decision to sign PK to a bridge contract. Anybody who had half a brain in evaluating talent should have realized that this was the time to sign him long term. It would not have cost them 9 million, even 7 million. It would have maybe cost them

LET'S MAKE THE HABS GREAT AGAIN

Image
My fellow habs hockey fans enough is enough. We need  to make the habs great again. We have had one lame general manager and coach after another for the habs. I have decided to throw my hat in the ring when the inevitable axe falls on Bergy and Therrien. Habs fans are demanding change. I am an outsider and not part of the establishment. The old establishment makes promises that they never keep when in office. The so-called hockey pundits know nothing about hockey with their loser Corsi stats and lack of vision. What do I offer you may ask? Well let me start with the obvious: 1) Our trade deals under Bergy have been a catastrophe. We have been getting fleeced by other GM's. What do we have to show for these trade deals. Bergy has gotten us a bunch of fourth liners like Mitchell, Flynn, DSP, Danault, Matteau, and don't remind me of John Scott and Mike Brown. His contract signings of Markov, Plekanec, Eller, Emelin, and Petry are an unmitigated disaster. No other

It's on me

Well reading all the habs pundits and habs fans on twitter there is really one major problem with the team and his name is Michel Therrien. Without Therrien at the helm this team would challenge for first place. Another coach could easily make the lines magically become productive especially with Galchenyuk as the number one center. The likes of Beaulieu, Pateryn and Andrighetto could be headed for stardom but are being held back by Michel Therrien's stubborn refusal to play young players. Once we rid ourselves of the rot known as Desharnais, Gilbert, and Weise this team will challenge for the Cup. Seriously. If we look at the talent level on this team it is abundantly clear that this team lacks in many departments. We have three players that are bona fide stars or productive players in Price, Subban and Pacioretty. We have one player who is close to them in Gallagher. Galchenyuk has for 2 years shown inconsistent bursts of offensive talent and may be headed to stardom. After t

In praise of short hockey people

Image
I am getting a little tired of people attacking David Deharnais because he is vertically challenged. Should I remind people how many great athletes have been short. Anyone heard of Diego Maradona? What about this year's MLS MVP Sebastian Giovinco. Fine you say these are not hockey players. Well Martin St Louis was real short. In the past there was Lou Angotti and Bobby Sheehan who were as tall as DD. Denis Savard was not that tall and that was one of the main reasons the habs took Doug Wickenheiser instead as their first pick in the NHL draft. Slightly taller than DD are the likes of Patrick Kane, Johnny Gaudreau, Brendan Gallagher, Brad Marchand and  even Sid the kid. I think DD is having a real good year and has been probably the most consistent hab forward. I was dismayed when I heard the same negative ranting recently against DD on morning radio. He is not a number one center, the team would be much better if Galchenyuk played all the time blah blah blah. Are these pe
